We are excited to announce that our first place winner was Raktika Galwa from Fredericton High School, our second place winner was Hope Tracy from Moncton Christian Academy, and our third place winner was Dan Rizk from Leo Hayes High School!

Event Details

We are thrilled to announce that the New Brunswick Brain Bee competition will be held in person on April 14, 2023, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The event is hosted by UNB’s Psychology Department, and will be held in Keirstead Hall (room 105) – 38 Dineen Drive, Fredericton, NB.

The New Brunswick Brain Bee is an exciting neuroscience competition (similar to a spelling bee) for high school students in grades 9-12. Participating in this event is a fantastic way to test your brain-related knowledge, alongside your peers. You will also get to interact with experts in the field of neuroscience and participate in a fun filled day of brief neuroscience and psychological experiments.

The winner of the New Brunswick Brain Bee competition will advance to the Canadian National Brain Bee competition, which will be held in person on May 19-20, 2023. Please consult the Canadian National Brain Bee’s main page for more information.

Eligibility

• Students can compete in only one Regional Brain Bee per year
• Students can participate in their Regional New Brunswick Brain Bee more than once, provided they have not previously come in first place
• Students must compete in the Regional Brain Bee closest geographically to their high school
• Students can compete in the Canadian National Brain Bee and the International Brain Bee only once

Event Preparation

As you prepare for the competition, you will independently (unless otherwise coordinated by your teachers) study subjects such as but not limited to memory, language, sleep, intelligence, emotion, perception, stress, aging, brain imaging, neurology, neurotransmitters, genetics, and discover how to identify numerous diseases of the brain.

Note: Patient Diagnosis, Neuroanatomy, Neurohistology resources will be provided here later.

You are also welcome to use Bright Lights in Neuroscience, an online study tool, to test your knowledge of neuroscience (however, this is optional and won’t be tested).

Our top three New Brunswick competitors will receive the following:

$150 (1st place), $100 (2nd place), and $50 (3rd place) in Indigo gift cards.
