About the Brain Bee

The Brain Bee is a competition for high school students (Grades 9-12) that tests basic neuroscience knowledge. It is a great opportunity for students interested in pursuing careers in neuroscience research and medicine to learn about the brain/nervous system. For more information about the Brain Bee visit the main page for more details.

The Victoria Brain Bee is organized by neuroscience research trainees in the Division of Medical Sciences at the University of Victoria.

FAQs

Who can register?

The Brain Bee is open to all grade 9 – 12 high school students from Victoria and surrounding regions.

I have previously participated in the local Brain Bee but did not win. Can I register again?

Yes, you can register again as long as you are still a high school student (grade 9 – 12). Important: Past winners are welcome to attend the event but they are not eligible to compete.

What can I expect at the event?

In addition to the competition, we will offer different activities including presentations on the brain/nervous system and demonstrations. Activities will differ depending on the year’s organizing committee.

What do I get if I win the Victoria Brain Bee?

The winner of the Victoria Brain Bee will represent Victoria at the CIHR Canadian National Brain Bee. This year the National Brain Bee will take place in two phases. In the first phase, local (regional) winners will compete virtually on Saturday, April 20, 2024. Only the top 3 competitors from the first phase will win travel and accommodation to compete in the second phase, which will be held in person during the 2024 Canadian Association for Neurosciences annual meeting in Vancouver on May 19-22, 2024. For more information check the Brain Bee Homepage.

The winner of the CIHR Canadian National Brain Bee will represent Canada at the International Brain Bee (IBB). The IBB will be virtual in 2024 – more information coming soon.

In the past, some Victoria Brain Bee participants have been invited to spend “A Day as Neuroscientist” working along with one of the neuroscientist in the Division of Medical Sciences at the University of Victoria. Some contestants have also successfully join neuroscience research laboratories at the University of Victoria as volunteers.
