Welcome to the Kingston Brain Bee Competition at
Queen’s University
The Centre for Neuroscience Studies (CNS) at Queen’s University is proud to plan and host the annual Kingston Brain Bee for high school students from Kingston and surrounding areas. The Brain Bee is an exciting opportunity for high school students to learn about the brain, medicine, and neuroscience research. This competition for students in grades 9 – 12, is held each year in April and is celebrated in more than 50 countries around the world! Each local champion advances to the respective National Brain Bee, and each National winner is invited to compete on the world stage at the annual International Brain Bee.
The annual Kingston Brain Bee will be held on April 29th, 2023. There is no cost to participate. Cash prizes of $500, $300, and $100 are awarded to the top three contestants, and all competitors will receive a participation certificate and a free Brain Bee t-shirt. The 1st place winner will be given the opportunity to advance to the Canadian National Brain Bee held at McMaster University on May 19-20th, 2023.

About the Kingston Brain Bee Competition
The Kingston Brain Bee is comprised of two equally-weighted sections:
A general knowledge competition, where students are tested on a variety of neuroscience concepts in the form of multiple choice, true/false, and short-answer questions.
BREAK – Anatomy Museum Tour
A patient-diagnosis component, where students will be presented with various clinical scenarios and required to correctly diagnose a neurological disease/disorder from a list of 13 possible diseases/disorders.
The overall highest-scoring students from the previous two sections will advance to a championship round, where they will compete for the title of the Kingston Brain Bee champion.

Preparing for the Kingston Brain Bee
Upon registration, students receive a PDF study booklet covering all testable material at the local level.
All students will also receive a set of suggested study plans to help guide and plan their competition preparation.

Kingston Competition Day
The Kingston Brain Bee will be held in the School of Medicine, 15 Arch St., Kingston.
Check-in will open at 9:15am in the School of Medicine Room 132A. Competitors are invited to arrive early so that they may get settled before the competition, which will begin promptly at 10:00am.
During check-in, competitors will receive their name tag, competitor number, and Brain Bee t-shirt. Students will also be asked to fill out a photo consent release form. Refreshments will be served.
Spectators are welcome, so students are encouraged to bring their parents/guardians, siblings, friends, etc.!
There will be 3 rounds of competition:
- General Knowledge competition
- Patient diagnosis competition
- Championship round (top-scoring students from previous two rounds)
Please note: Use of electronic devices by participants during the competition is strictly prohibited.
In between the written and patient diagnosis rounds, competitors will be invited to tour the School of Medicine’s Anatomy Museum!
An awards ceremony will immediately follow the championship round. The top 3 winners will be presented with cash prizes and certificates, and all students will receive a participation certificate and a prize bag.
After the competition, a pizza lunch will be served. During lunch, graduate neuroscience students will be available to answer questions about their experience at Queen’s, undergraduate science programs, and neuroscience research.
Preparing for the National Brain Bee
The winner of the Kingston Brain Bee is eligible to receive FREE tutoring by Queen’s Neuroscience graduate students in preparation for the National competition.
